The room is hot all night and we don’t sleep all that
well.
Lunch is just off Princes Street with stunning views
across to the castle. Unfortunately, we are too early to witness the One
O’clock gun firing from the castle. Rats.
We have breakfast at the hostel, which is OK, though the
coffee is crap and then head off for the Hop-On Hop-Off bus to get an overview
of Edinburgh. This is quite good however
sometimes the commentary is out of sync with our location, but we get the
general idea.
We bale out at the Waverley Street Bridge to go to the
Information Centre, where luckily I can get our train tickets for the trip to
St Bees.
| Edinburgh Castle |
It’s then back on the bus, which takes us to the castle
for a tour. Well self-guided using the audio thingo! Three hours later and with
sore feet, we are done. The pictures tell the story.
| The inner castle |
Back down the Royal Mile past a plethora of kilt and
tartan purveyors. It’s hard to believe they can all make a living.
I am on the look-out for a Hairy Coo hat for the grandies.
Boring as we are we go for the Indian once again and have
a bloody hot “mild” chicken tikka bhuna! The Indians so here do not seem to use
beef at all in their cooking. Something about there being no demand!!
It’s then back to our hostel briefly then off for a “The
Dark Side of Edinburgh” Tour that starts at 9.00PM!
We have a Spanish guide, taking an English tour, and she
is very good. We traipse all over the city, hearing about body snatchers,
torture, witches being burned and hangings and even a variety of the
guillotine, called the maiden, that utilised blade!! That way it took a couple
of goes to sever the head of the guilty.
We walking into cemeteries at night, stood in a mausoleum
and head about some of Edinburgh’s follies, like the observatory that was
situated in a spot too misty to be operable, a time ball tower that was unable
to be seen from the harbour again due to the cloud, rain and mist!.
All in all a good night, that meant a good night’s sleep.
We have changed rooms so we are cooler!! Yippee.
